Gay marriage comes off badly in Polish TV debate

In the campaign for the office of president the presiding head of state Bronisław Komorowski has won a victory in a TV debate. However neither Komorowski nor his conservative-nationalist rival Jarosław Kaczyński succeeded in scoring points in the discussion about same-sex partnerships, in the opinion of the liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza: "'A marriage is a union between a woman and a man. Attempts to depart from this principle would break the law,' said Jarosław Kaczyński unequivocally. And the hardcore of voters, who were recently disappointed with their chairman's flirting with the left, were rather relieved. However, supporters of the [left] SLD, who react sensitively to discrimination against gays and lesbians, are bound to have screamed with anger. Bronisław Komorowski darted sideways and said that gay couples can already inherit from their partner. Yes, they can, but then the 'real' family can challenge this in court. And what is more they also have to pay high taxes, as if they were people who did not belong to the family."
