Commemorative plaque resolves Polish cross dispute
Poland continues to seek a solution to the fight over how to commemorate late President Lech Kaczyński, who died in a plane crash in April. Newly elected President Bronisław Komorowski has now proposed that the capital city of Warsaw remove the memorial cross from in front of his official residence and replace it with a commemorative plaque. The magazine Newsweek Polska lauds this proposal: "It is good that the president's office has asked the state conservator for permission to set up a memorial honouring the victims of the catastrophe in Smolensk. Only the quick placement of such a plaque can bring this escalating conflict to a halt. The president's office has learned from experience. They have decided to take action to stem the riots over the cross in front of the Presidential Palace. ... This is real progress. Once they have put up the commemorative plaque, they can set up the cross elsewhere. Perhaps that will solve the problem."
