Serbia prefers EU over Kosovo

After lengthy negotiations and a UN resolution Serbia declared itself willing to enter into dialogue with Kosovo. According to the daily Politiken Serbia has lost the game over its former province but opened the door to the EU: "Serbia has given in for the sake of gaining access to the EU, but at the same time it still refuses to recognise Kosovo as an independent state. It must be said that this doesn't pose any major problems internationally, as with the UN resolution Serbia de facto recognises that it has lost Kosovo for good. Within Serbia, the machinations over the UN resolution may lead to a criss and new elections, as the opposion can rightly say that the government had no mandate for the change of course. But much speaks for the fact that like everyone else in the vicininty, the Serbs have had enough of the conflict over Kosovo. There are good reasons to believe that they too are convinced the EU must be given top priority."
