Orbán wants to restrict constitutional court

The right-wing conservative ruling party Fidesz plans to curb the powers of the Hungarian Constitutional Court, which has rejected a law passed by the party. This distortion of the constitutional state will unfortunately fail to provoke protests from civil society, legal sociologist Zoltán Fleck complains on the leftist opinion platform Galamus: "What is the situation today? We have an insatiable government consisting of uncivilised politicians who haven't a clue about what a constitutional culture governed by the rule of law is. This unscrupulous government technically has all the powers in its hands and can therefore make any changes it wants to the constitution. ... On top of that we have a pretty apathetic society that is insensitive to the values of a constitutional state. The political class, which has invested considerable energy into dumbing down and demoralising the people, is largely to blame for the deplorable state of our society. And the power machinery called Fidesz is reaping the benefits. ... Hungarian society, fleeing its freedoms, will defend neither the rule of law nor democracy. Public opinion will therefore hardly be shaken by this maiming of the constitutional state."
