Too many Bulgarian ambassadors former spies
More than a third of Bulgaria's embassies are led by former agents of the country's communist-era State Security, as a list published by the Bulgarian secret services records commission revealed on Wednesday. The government has responded by demanding the recall of the diplomats in question, but has met with opposition from President Georgi Parvanov, himself a former State Security agent. The diplomatic relations of the country now threaten to plunge into chaos, writes the daily Trud: "Within a few hours the publishing of a number of files has led to political chaos and a serious war between the institutions. Unfortunately this is happening in the field of diplomacy. In other words: it will go beyond the borders of our dear country. ... In the language of diplomacy the simultaneous recall of such a large number of ambassadors will result in our country having serious conflicts with the host countries. And that in turn will produce a very unpleasant echo internationally."
