Zhu Feng on China's problem child

Wikileaks has published a number of US cables in which details about China's policy towards North Korea. They include the information that China is prepared to accept the reunification of Korea to South Korea's advantage. Zhu Feng expresses his disbelief in the business paper Jornal de Negócios: "Because it stands in total contrast to China's policy. China has neither openly condemned North Korea for sinking the South Korean warship Cheonan in March, nor has it condemned it for the recent artillery attack on South Korea's Yeonpyeong island. … A majority of Chinese feel no sympathy for Kim Jong-il's dynastic Leninist regime. And the two countries have gone very different ways politically, economically and socially. Yet the Chinese leadership doesn't seem to be able to give up North Korea, regardless of how despicable its behaviour may be. … In the end China's annoyance with North Korea generally boils down to refusing to play any role in the downfall of its neighbour and former ally. … The Chinese leadership is aware that North Korea is an enormous burden on China, but like a loving parent with a son who has gone astray, it simply can't bring itself to repudiate him."
