Polish right-wing populist opts for suicide

The former Polish deputy prime minister Andrzej Lepper committed suicide last week. An unusual step for a right-wing populist like Lepper, writes the left-liberal daily Népszabadság: "Tribunes of the people seldom commit suicide. It doesn't suit their role. And Andrzej Lepper was a genuine tribune of the people. ... In 1991 he started his career in politics wearing dirty rubber boots. He understood people and knew how to deal with the press. Lepper declared himself guardian of the farmers. ... He entered the race for the presidency several times and brought his party into the Sejm, where he served as deputy speaker. For a few months he was also a euro-sceptic Member of the European Parliament. However the high point in his political career came when he served under the conservative government [of Jarosław Kaczyński] as minister of agriculture and deputy prime minister."
