Pope's visit helps crisis-ridden Spain
Pope Benedict XVI will be coming to the Spanish capital of Madrid in mid-August for the Catholic World Youth Day. Let down by the crises of modern life, Spain is using this opportunity to reflect on its Christian roots, writes the Catholic daily Avvenire approvingly: "Spain's economic wonder has burst like a bubble. The crisis has left only disappointment in its wake. And it is the youth who will pay for it most dearly. As we approach World Youth Day, this is something that is now dawning on the Spanish people. They are asking themselves sincerely how much the pressures of modern life have left their mark on the country and how much of its authentic soul remains. ... Spain has not been extinguished, it has just been thrown into shadows by the garish light of an illusion that has long since failed. But when a country has to show its true face in the midst of an identity crisis, it sees that its Christian roots have never betrayed, disappointed or crushed it under the weight of promises that cannot be kept."
