Fight corruption in Austria
A series of major corruption scandals have erupted in Austria in recent weeks. The left-liberal daily Kurier calls on politicians and society at large to give the topic the attention it deserves: "From the real estate firm BUWOG to Skylink, from the Eurofighter to Telekom Austria - hardly a day passes without fresh proof surfacing of intolerable corruption, huge networks and relentless cover-ups. How many politicians are busily washing each other's hands? The arrest of a bank robbers' gang is trumpeted through the streets, but the far more unscrupulous who haunt the banks and cheat the system not just out of a few thousand but millions upon millions of euros are still roaming the corridors and brazenly stretching the phrase 'presumption of innocence' to breaking point. And we can only guess which deals, which swindles, have yet to come to light. [Austrian President] Heinz Fischer is calling for stronger laws in the fight against corruption. And we join in the call, fully aware of the mockery with which such calls will be greeted."
