Vatican must investigate new cases of abuse

In recent weeks new cases of abuse at several British dioceses of the Catholic Church have come to light. The Vatican must ensure that the cases of abuse in the Roman Catholic dioceses of London, Devon and Cornwall are thoroughly investigated and exposed, writes the conservative daily The Times: "There is still fury among some devout Catholics at what they regard as the intrusion by the press into this murky area. British Catholics faced up to some of these problems a decade ago, prompted by the row over an abusive priest at Gatwick, and two subsequent reports have led to structures of protection that some have described as a model of what should be done. But when things go wrong, the response to calamity must never be secrecy. Those calling for rigorous investigation are not anti-Catholic; they are anti-abuse. From the Vatican down, that must be the response to these latest scandals."
