Serbia must do more for EU membership
The EU heads of state and government refused to give Serbia the status of a candidate country for EU membership at their summit in Brussels on Friday. The decision about the country's candidate status will now be postponed until March 2012 at the earliest. The left-liberal daily Delo says the summit decision is understandable and calls on Serbia to redouble its efforts: "Although Brussels probably wants to avoid a further deterioration in relations between Belgrade and Priština if there is a changeover of power in Serbia the EU will no longer put up with Belgrade keeping its cards close to its chest. Serbia's president Boris Tadić is asking himself why Serbia's efforts are seen as a failure. He must have failed to realise that it's not enough for Serbia to sign papers and agreements but not implement them - as with the agreement on joint supervision of the border crossings between Serbia and Kosovo, for example."
