Capital of Culture Maribor blossoms

Slovenia's second-largest city Maribor has been named European Capital of Culture 2012. The project shows every sign of success despite the numerous delays and financial difficulties encountered during the preparations, writes the left-liberal daily Delo: "By hook, by crook and through the art of improvisation, the organisers have managed to pull off a successful European Cultural Capital project despite all the problems. At least on the short term, Maribor and its five Slovenian partner cities will experience a one-year cultural and artistic renaissance. Regardless of all the setbacks, the programme is comparable with most European cultural capitals in terms both of quality and quantity. Nevertheless the difficulties which have beset the preparations for 2012 will become visible in the long term. Because until now a 'cultural institution' worthy of the name has failed to emerge in any of the six partner cities."
