Islam in Europe


Islam is the third-largest religious community in the countries of Western Europe. European newspapers report on its relationship with Europeans, closely observe conflicts such as the cartoon dispute, examine the traditions of Islam in Europe, and question the possibility of a modernisation of Islam and its compatibility with European values.

Spanish magistrate Baltasar Garzón has dropped his investigation into crimes committed during the Spanish Civil War and under the Franco dictatorship, passing it on to the regional courts. In so doing Garzón has forestalled the highest criminal court in Spain, which was to decide whether the case fell under his jurisdiction. The European press asks why.
