"Can Greece finally be counted among the big actors on Europe's petrol market ? The answer is yes according to members of the government who have just signed [with Bulgaria and Russia] an agreement for the construction of an oil pipeline between the Black Sea and the Aegean", explains Mihali Kaitantzidis. "After fourteen years of discussions, the pipeline will transport up to 35 million tons of petrol from the Caspian Sea to western Europe, skirting the Turkish straits. This oil pipeline project has been added to the project of a gas pipeline between the Caspian Sea and Italy, via the town of Komotini [Greece and Italy signed an agreement on January 31st]. However, competition is intense [in the energy sector], and the Greek government's natural optimism brought on by these two big projects does not diminish the danger."
