Jean-Marie Colombani, chief-editor of the daily, regrets that the candidates in the French Presidential election campaign are "competing in modesty", each as timid as the other about Europe, but are now "preoccupied by national identity". "As if this did not have everything to gain from a European project! As if History had not taught us that a project such as Europe is impossible to separate from France's identity! Following the road to European identity will further guarantee French identity. There is no model, not yet, but there are already, from Brest to Budapest, the basic foundations of a civilisation of solidarity. And there is a dialogue facing the power of Chinese and American forceful empires The nation remains, as most Europeans wish, the main framework for democratic expression and for the modelling of the national 'model'. But the Union is already the only framework that allows these nations any hope of handling the major questions before us."
