The applications for erstwhile leading political figures to be proclaimed 'Father of the Nation' are piling up in the Slovak parliament. Among those who have been proposed for the title are Andrej Hlinka, a Catholic priest and nationalist leader who lived at the beginning of the 20th century, but also Alexander Dubček, leader of the communist party during the Prague Spring. Márius Kopcsay is sceptical. "You can't assess historic events or personalities from the current perspective in political terms - much less by a vote in parliament. It's obvious that amateur historians won't be able to shed more light on the past. ... The MPs are conducting absurd debates at the taxpayers' expense."
