The architect Rudy Ricciotti evokes plans to construct a building that will eventually house the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (Mucem), near Marseille's old port. "It is very difficult to build when the sea is watching us. It makes us feel guilty. I conceived of this building with a great sense of anxiety, because the surrounding landscape is such a passionate one, a Tartar desert of rocks and dust, bathed in a blinding light, full of silence and solitude." According to the newspaper, "the edifice imagined by Rudy Ricciotti presents itself as a glass-fronted square building measuring 52x52 metres. ... The exterior material plays with the idea of the moucharabieh, the coral reef and lacework, in shades of grey that evoke minerality."
