The 26th edition of the Montpellier Dance Festival, devoted to Mediterranean artists, opened on Saturday, June 24. Its president, Jean-Paul Montanari stresses the political significance of the event in an interview with Marie-Christie Vernay. "This festival offers a support for the emergence of a 'new kind' of dance, one tied to social and economic trends. ... What I have beeen aware of, more than ever, from the very beginning of this festival, is the extreme importance of making artists and their works known. This notion is essential to European construction. Granting visas should be a priority. ... When I look back on the '92 festival, which was also devoted to the Mediterranean, I do not see things getting any better. Everything is sliding: the left towards the right, the right towards the extreme right."
