Bulgaria's second emigration
Shortly after the changeover to democracy in Bulgaria, the economic situation led many citizens to leave. Today, the emigration has another quality, says Jowko Lambrew. "You can't remain unaffected when you have to see off two close friends within a week, because they are leaving the country forever. ... In the first wave of emigration, people left because of the economic pressure or out of a lust for adventure. This new wave looks to be more painful: Now, those people are leaving who had stayed behind, hoping to help bring about change. They have faith, hope and a strong will. These are not the obedient followers, but the dreamers and creative ones, who have finally understood that they are not needed here."
