German recession to hit the Czech Republic
The conservative newspaper Lidové noviny fears that the economic downturn in Germany will also affect the Czech Republic: "Although Germany's share of Czech exports is sinking continuously, it still accounts for more than 30 percent. According to calculations by the Federal Statistical Office Germany is now in a recession, and that will no doubt have repercussions on the Czech Republic. ... 2009 will be hard. We can expect prices to rise, regardless of the drop in oil prices and the slowdown in inflation. As opposed to recent years, however, unemployment will rise as well. Companies must adjust to sinking demand by cutting costs. That means layoffs."

Taking advantage of the euro exchange rate
The Belgian brewer InBev has bought out the American brewery Anheuser-Bush. The conservative newspaper Lidové noviny is surprised that more European firms have not crossed the Atlantic to profit from the advantageous euro-dollar exchange rate: "Tens of thousands of Europeans are taking advantage of the exchange rate and buying massively in the US. Foreign purchases over the Internet are already noticeably influencing American retail trade statistics. But European companies are far more reserved when it comes to buying up American firms. From this perspective InBev is an exception. Europeans are concentrating more on China, India and Brazil. But in so doing they are missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime chance."

Dependency on oil supports terrorism
Jaroslav Plesl, deputy editor in chief of Lidove Noviny, recalls that exactly ten years ago Osama Bin Laden qualified a crude oil price of 144 dollars per barrel as "fair". This mark was reached yesterday, Plesl writes, and Islamic zealots can celebrate the event as a victory in the struggle against the West: "70 percent of crude oil reserves lie under Muslim states that directly or indirectly support Islamic radicals. In this way, American money - and that of the West in general - flows into countries that do everything to weaken the democratic world. ... Our dependence on oil is consequently the major obstacle to successfully countering Islamic terrorism. ... There is only one way to escape this dilemma: we need new sources of energy. But the West has a key advantage over undemocratic countries. Democracy and competition are an extraordinary boon to innovation, and this will help us now as it has before."

A second term for Vaclav Klaus
The Czech Parliament has confirmed Václav Klaus as president. Jaroslav Plesl worries about Klaus' possible influence, as an EU critic, on the Czech EU presidency in the first half of 2009: "Klaus – who enjoys international attention - won't miss this opportunity. We will see if his statements about clipping the wings of the EU should be taken seriously, or if instead he will cause either an international embarrassment or great amusement. ... In his second term in office Klaus might come to understand that his career is heading for its end, and this might eliminate his last remaining self-control."
