German newspaper suspected of racism

For Anne Applebaum, a columnist for the Washington Post living in Poland, the reaction of the German left-wing daily die tageszeitung to Barack Obama's victory in the Democratic primaries belied a racist attitude. The front page featured a picture of the White House under the headline 'Onkel Baracks Hütte' (Uncle Barack's cabin). "Yes, the Americans are voting for a black. But will the citizens of other countries accept a black US president? ... The publishers claim it was intended as a satirical piece. But this newspaper has already published an article about [former] US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice titled 'Onkel Toms Rice' (Uncle Tom's Rice - an allusion to her surname). So the newspaper's journalists are well aware of the negative associations with 'Uncle Tom'. It is good to hear foreign voices expressing concern about Obama's lack of experience in international affairs. Although these concerns are fully justified, I do detect a racist tone in them sometimes. ... The way American politics is perceived in other countries has always said a lot about the countries themselves. But never as much as in this year's US election campaign."

Kiev pauses for breath

While in Ukraine's capital 10,000 supporters of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich have gathered to protest against President Viktor Yushchenko's dissolution of the parliament, former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewsk and the Polish Vice President of the European parliament, Marek Siwiec, have initiated unofficial talks with the two opponents. In a guest commentary Anne Applebaum of the Washington Post writes that "Poland has an important role to fulfil in Ukraine - in particular by backing Ukraine's independence and acting as a counterweight to the position of more pro-Russian states like Germany and France. Warsaw could exert pressure on Brussels to strengthen its diplomatic ties with Kiev and make its decisions independently of its relations with Russia."

Die Welt - Germany | 10/10/2006

Anna Politkovskaya's murder: how should the West react to Russia?

The newspaper reprints an article written by Washington Post columnist Anne Applebaum on the murder of Anna Politkovskaya. "Local businessmen had no motivation to kill her -- but officials of the army, the police and even the Kremlin did... As Russian (and Eastern European) history well demonstrates, it isn't always necessary to kill millions of people to frighten all the others: A few choice assassinations, in the right time and place, usually suffice. Since the arrest of oil magnate Mikhail Khodorkovsky in 2003, no other Russian oligarchs have attempted even to sound politically independent. After the assassination of Politkovskaya on Saturday, it's hard to imagine many Russian journalists following in her footsteps to Grozny either."
