Klaus Bachler, director of Vienna's Burgtheater, talks in an interview led by Barbara Petsch and Norbert Mayer about his theatre and the global crisis in culture. "Nowadays, people think only in terms of material wealth, but the real threat we face is that of intellectual starvation. Art must combat this intellectual poverty. People are reading less and less. They're no longer interested in where they come from, either from a psychological or historical point of view. This is why they're losing their identity. My vision is not about drawing people to the theatre to reflect on everyday life, or criticise it or make fun of it, but so they can be transported beyond the its boundaries."
