Continuity with Obama?
In the Italian daily La Stampa Enrico Betizza predicts a rude awakening from the Obama dream. "Obama will have to set aside his mesmerizing rock star mask and be forced to navigate his way through the traps and thorns that are the legacy of the previous government in global politics. Reconciling the unilaterality of the US with the flexibility of the Europeans will be one of the most difficult challenges he faces. The truth is that many a dozy dreamer in Europe mistook Barack Hussein Obama for a knight in shining armour out of a fairytale, whose roots are more in Africa and Asia than in America. But despite his exotic name it turns out that Obama is an all-out American and more truth than we could have ever imagined while we stood hypnotised by the shadow and light of his rise to power. We would do well to remember that he has triumphed with a programme that all things considered is less radical than that of Hilary Clinton and that the indications are that his path - at least as far as foreign policy is concerned - will not be one of momentous change. The break with the Bush Administration will thus be more a matter of form than substance."

The French approach to the Middle East
The writer Enzo Bettiza comments on the new role played by France in the Middle East in the context of France's upcoming EU Council presidency: "The sanction package just passed by Brussels against Tehran lends weight to Sarkozy's speech in the Knesset. ... The fact that the French EU Council presidency coincides with the end of the Bush era allows Sarkozy to cast himself as bringer of peace and key player in reviving the Middle East diplomacy of France and Europe. ... Sarkozy is already planning to fill any gaps in the Middle East left by America in the post-Bush era. ... Sarkozy's EU presidency could be a decisive period that positively affects both domestic and foreign EU policy. Sarkozy combines the real return of France with the virtual weight of Europe in this difficult region. This gives us a clear view of the future and the third phase of the EU, after its founding and Maastricht."

The Church and the communist secret service
The journalist and writer Enzo Bettiza offers his interpretation of the revelations concerning the past of Archbishop of Warsaw. "It is not easy to understand the scandal which is perhaps the most serious since 1989 in the tumultuous, former Communist universe of Central Europe. Having only just been named Archbishop of Warsaw, [Wielgus] owned up to something incredible: to have been a spy at the service of Communism for 20 years. ... We do not know the nature of the damage done by the hidden activity of the prelate, but the point is not so much the quantity of harm done to the Church and anti-communist dissidents. The main point is that in a country where the Church has always been a moral reference, the case of Wielgus is creating disgust and devastation, not only because he collaborated with the former Communist services, but above all because he denied the truth right up until the end".
