Christian-democrats back in Belgium
Cornelia Bolesch writes that despite the swerve to the right in its parliamentary elections Belgium is still a model state within Europe. "Why ? Because Europe has no cause to tremble every time Belgium holds its general elections. Because regardless of what the new government in Belgium will look like, it will consist of committed Europeans. Because the Belgian parliament voted in favour of the constitutional treaty with an overwhelming majority. Because both in Flanders and in Wallonia Europe is a fixed concept that is not continually called into question. Because Europe not only takes up a large part of the agenda of most parties, but is also the focus of constructive ideas. And because Belgium's complex internal structure never posed an obstacle to the development of the European Union.

Europe tries to debate its way out of the crisis
In the daily's leading article Cornelia Bolesch demands that Europe's politicians "stop being cowardly in the face of the people". "The dictates of democracy do not require that the European constitution project be dropped like a hot potato at the first, unexpected sign of resistance from the populace. And it's not enough to worry about how best to disguise the object of contention, so that it can somehow be smuggled through at a later point in time. Politicians are elected to lead the way and give us direction. They're not there to act as proxies for wavering public opinion, and they shouldn't seek refuge in cheap tricks. Nobody can prohibit a politician from fighting for a cause in which he truly believes."

EU budget agreement
Cornelia Bolesch takes the end of the "torturous dispute over the EU budget" as an opportunity to analyse the performance of EU institutions. Although critical of the result, she says there can be no talk of stagnation. "The European Parliament should be mentioned first. This multinational institution is adapting itself to Europe's needs. The great European coalition between Christian Democrats and Socialists is nothing new, but in recent times the two major factions in Strasbourg have managed to join forces particularly effectively. At a relatively early stage in the negotiations they started moving towards a compromise solution, pulling the other institutions in their wake."
