Good times for Geneva's luxury brands

The Internet auction website Ebay has been ordered to pay a high fine to the luxury goods company LVMH for allowing fake products to be sold on the site. The French judgement could make Swiss luxury brands even richer, predicts Tribune de Genève: "Swiss luxury watchmakers have something to laugh about. They have won a major battle without having to take up arms themselves. ... In France the Internet auction site Ebay has been sentenced to pay 64 million Swiss francs to the luxury label LVMH, which accused the American web giant of allowing its products, and what is more, fakes, to be sold on their site. ... The fine of over 60 million Swiss francs has given the judges' arguments considerably more weight. The Internet dealers had already given vague promises that they would wage war on fakes. Now this will become a priority for them, perhaps even their solemn duty."

The scandal of the French socialist property

The editorialist Edourad Bolleter ironically comments on the revelations that have shed light on the property of the French presidential candidate Ségolène Royal and her spouse François Hollande. "Attackers of Swiss fiscal advantages, Socialist party dignitaries are actually no better and no worse than most of us. They are just a bit richer. ... Like all well-off proprietors in France, they use, in all legality, an ad hoc structure [the SCI, a civil estate agency] aiming to optimise the management of their cherished property. In so doing, they can benefit from the odd fiscal exemption. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to real life, where fiscal advantages, as it turns out, concern everybody (or almost everybody) and don't seem as criminal as all that. This somewhat ironic realisation has caused laughter among certain Swiss inhabitants over the past few days."
