Spain and the 'dangerous precedent' of Kosovo

Spain is one of the six EU countries that will not recognise Kosovo's independence, fearing that it sets a precedent which its own minorities could exploit. Ignacio Camacho feels that those who recognise Kosovan independence are irresponsible for they encourage "the secessionist momentum which threatens the stability of several European states, including our [Spain]... By accepting a state that starts from nothing , or which even the most basic structures must be built, Western powers have accommodated a precedent that no mere theoretical statement can undo. From now on, any creeping nationalism, however fanatic it may or may not be, knows that should it declare independence, France, Germany, and even the Yankees, are quite capable not only of looking the other way for reasons of strategic convenience, but of actually giving their consent or blessing."

The '7 new wonders of the world' are a deception spread via the internet

In an editorial, Ignacio Camacho vehemently criticises the '7 new wonders of the world' competition, which announced its results Saturday, July 7th. One hundred million people voted for the finalists on the Internet. "The Internet aspires to be some sort of pan-democratic universe, but it still lends itself too easily to cheating and manipulation. ... [the competition] reinvigorated a chauvinist fever camouflaged as direct democracy. ... It provided a forum for one-upsmanship in something as basic as national pride, an intermingling of touristy interest and a simple popular thirst for recognition and self-esteem. ... The eighth wonder of the world in this absurd ranking isn't Alhambra, in Grenada, but the naivety and the blind-trust that floats on the internet like scum on the ocean of collective superficiality."

The controversial work of the Spanish photographer Moreno Montoya

A complaint has been filed in Spain against the photographer José Antonio Moreno Montoya, accused of 'religious outrage' for staging various figures of the Catholic religion and several civil servants of the Extremadura region who granted him financial aid. With a lot of irony, Ignacio Camachio harshly criticised these photos, which he qualifies as "Blasphemous, rude pornography and vulgar provocation. On top of this, the work is subsidised by the Extremadura community. Of course you can be modern and avant-gardist, but this modernist breach is being financed with tax-payers' money. ... If this illustrious Cartier-Bresson of Extremadura, this famous Hamilton of the prairies, this remarkable Man Ray of the cork-tree plantations, had used his incredible courage to depict Mohammed masturbating with Aïcha or sodomising a camel, he would not find a corner on earth to shelter from the wrath of Allah's son and not a single Alliance of civilisations would enable any escape from the bloody fatwa that would be thrust upon politicians capable of subsidising such scatological delirium."

Zidane, a mirror of the World Cup

"For the love of God, Zizou, how could you have done this to us?" laments columnist Ignacio Camacho. "Tell us what Materazzi, that beanpole with the menacing look and tattooed arms said to you. Explain things to a baffled, dejected world. ... Look at the state you have put us in. Hundreds of journalists, thousands of supporters, millions of fans singing the praises of your exemplary integrity, your serene bearing, your dazzling elegance, your shy and humble aura, that entire halo of virtues that elevated your image and adorned you with a crown of symbolic laurels at the bitter-sweet hour of farewells. It was such a beautiful night, Zizou, the floodlights of the Berlin stadium illuminated you in all your majesty, the successful penalty kick, your inspired footwork, a head-butted ball that nearly catapulted you to glory... and suddenly the lights went out, and you exited via the back door on your night of greatest glory."
