King Silvio: 14 years on

Filippo Ceccarelli looks back on the political career of the new Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who will be sworn in today for the fourth time as head of government. "Over 14 years, three presidents - Scalfaro, Ciampi and Napolitano - have summoned Berlusconi to build a government. The first time, in April 1994, he was beaming and full of anticipation. The second, in 2001, he saucily let fly that he was no longer a dilettante. In April 2005, the third time, he glowered and was almost reluctant to take office after infighting within his own ranks. ... The rise of Silvio IV is no doubt his most soft-spoken, calmest and for that reason perhaps also his most enigmatic."

The Italian left has a shortage of leaders

Filippo Ceccareli considers that the Italian left, soon to be regrouped into a 'Democratic Party' is suffering from a lack of natural leaders. "Many within the Democratic Party [which will be officially launched on October 16th, 2007], are strutting about and bickering. They can be heard evoking the necessity of a real leader to conceal the turmoil, to escape the crisis of legitimacy that the left is confronted with. The centre right, by contrast, does have a leader, even if Berlusconi is more a king, a chief, an idol, someone who disrupted politics by introducing modernity. ... For those at the head of the centre left, the desire to become a leader is an ailment that creates disorder and insecurity."

Nanni Moretti's 'Caïman' hits the big screen

Nanni Moretti's new film, 'Le Caïman', an attack against Silvio Berlusconi, opens in cinemas today in Italy. The Italian filmmaker, who decided not to do any promotion for the film ahead of its release, is beginning a tour of the country to present it. Filippo Ceccarelli looks back at the career and the political commitment of one who foresaw all the crises - from that of the PCI [Italian communist party] to Berlusconi, via Craxi. "With 17 days to go to election day, it is worth reminding ourselves that for the past 30 years, every time a political crisis glimmered on the horizon, Nanni Moretti has been ahead of the curve. Since 1973, there has not been a single disaster, nor political debacle, nor regime crisis that he has not predicted and illustrated, usually with a resonance which in this case should impress 'le Cavaliere' [Berlusconi]. Because pending evidence to the contrary, the bite of the caïman was destined for him."
