Berlusconi mixes media, business and government

Former editor of 'The Economist' magazine Bill Emmott cautions anyone celebrating Silvio Berlusconi's election victory in Italy. "Berlusconi had some powerful advantages. He is Italy's richest man by far, enjoying a near monopoly of commercial television, a big publishing empire, and lots of other interests. Such a domination of the broadcast media by a party leader would be considered an unacceptable infringement of democracy in any other west European country. ... But Berlusconi also uses a mixture of lawsuits, patronage and threats to intimidate Italian journalists. ... Berlusconi should be a cautionary tale for us all about what happens when you allow one man to dominate the media, and when the interests of big business and of government become intertwined."

Alitalia may no longer be Italian

The governing board of the Italian airline Alitalia will be gathering this Tuesday, December 18th, to evaluate the offers made by two competitors. Bill Emmott analyses the duel that opposes Air-France and KLM to the private Italian airline AirOne. "In the case of Alitalia, we can be sure that politics will always get involved, by any means possible, no matter what company owns it. In order to curb political influence, foreign investors represent the best solution. In addition, it will be easier to deal with the trade unions blackmailing Alitalia with the threat of a strike if it were owned by a foreign company rather than a little national one such as AirOne. The French giant would survive a long conflict, whereas AirOne couldn't afford one."

Xenophobia has reached Strasbourg

The British writer and journalist Bill Emmott, former chief editor of the magazine 'The Economist', deplores the creation of a far-right group in the European Parliament. According to him, the rejection of immigration is what this new group has in common, exploiting fear, prejudice, and the refusal of difference. No European who values civilisation and traditional values that are an intrinsic part their continent can possibly rejoice in the fact that, for the first time in the existence of European Parliament, there is an extreme right-wing group that can benefit from public funds and be represented in official commissions. The very name of this group, 'Identity, Tradition and Sovereignty', is already a provocation. It is a slap in the face of the European Parliament, insofar as the identity and sovereignty referred to by this group is nationalistic and anti-European".
