Young immigrants break onto the European charts
"More and more young people of Arab origin who were raised in Europe are showing up on the continent's music charts. They sing about the difficulty of integration, conflicts between cultures and religions and petty daily injustices," reports Andrea Laffranchi, who met one of them, Amir Issa, who came to singing by way of hip-hop. The 27-year-old son of an Egyptian immigrant, Issa is the first second-generation immigrant to present his own songs on national radio and TV, while continuing to stress his roots. "This is my country but I often feel like a foreigner ... I am pleased that people consider me to be a spokesman of children of immigrants. Italy is not yet ready for the 'melting pot', but it is gradually becoming more normal."
