The dispute over radio and TV licence fees in Poland
The Polish government wants to abolish radio and TV licence fees and use the national budget to finance state television and radio. Renowned artists have protested against the plans in an open letter to Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Above all they fear the move could lead to the privatisation of state media. Wojciech Maziarski retorts: "For generations, the cultural identity of the nation has formed without intervention from the state (for centuries the Poles didn't even have their own state). To this day the state doesn't publish its own books, it doesn't print newspapers or magazines and it doesn't record music. There are no state cinemas, cabarets, web pages or blogs, so why do we need state television or radio?"

Early elections in Poland
New elections have been pushed forward to October 21 in Poland. Wojciech Maziarski criticises the performance of the Law and Justice Party (PiS) and the Kaczynski brothers during their two years in government. "The PiS may not have entirely destroyed the foundations of liberal democracy, but it has certainly weakened them... The PiS is infected with the anti-democracy virus but the virus is still too weak to contaminate the whole organism. It's just how a vaccine works: one injects a weakened strain of the virus which activates the organism's defence system and makes it immune... The past two years have revealed the weakspots in the organism of the constitutional state. We know now that the government must be prevented from having direct influence over state prosecution and that the state should not be allowed to control public media... And we can certainly not leave these tasks to the PiS under the leadership of Jarosław Kaczyński."
