Funding for Danish films
Danish minister for culture Brian Mikkelsen has presented his new concept for government funding for the film industry. According to his concept, films aimed at a wide audience will receive the bulk of government funds. Film critic Christian Monggard voices his disapproval: "It makes more sense to sponsor film directors' visions and creativity than films that will attract a large audience anyway. The first films made by innovative film directors like Lars von Trier didn't attract big crowds, but gradually, once he found his own style and voice, he was able to reach a larger audience. This shift in priorities in film funding carries the risk that directors who explore the limits of film as a medium will have less chance to develop their talents."

The fake DVD version of 'Babette's Feast'
The Danish film 'Babette's Feast', which won an Oscar in 1987, has now appeared as a DVD version produced by a film company, Nordisk Film. On the DVD the film has been digitally brightened up and the colours have been changed – without consulting the cameraman, Henning Christiansen, or the film's director, Gabriel Axel. Axel expressed his disgust in an interview with Christian Monggaard. "The mood and the whole atmosphere of the film is completely different. 'Babette's Feast' has a quite wondrous atmosphere when it's shown under optimal conditions in the cinema. This atmosphere is created by all the little things we would miss if they weren't there. They vanish completely if the film's lighting is brightened up. This is a massive betrayal of the public, the technicians and everybody who was involved in making the film."
