Romania shows interest in South Stream

Romanian Economics Minister Varujan Vosganian has announced that Romania is currently examining the possibilty of participating in the Russian-Italian gas pipeline project South Stream. South Stream is regarded as a rival to the European pipeline project Nabucco. The newspaper Adevarul speculates about the reasons for Vosganian's announcement. "Our neighbours, the Bulgarians and the Serbs have concluded the deal with Moscow, but things have been delayed. Apparently there are Russian demands that Sofia and Belgrade regard as excessive. ... Vladimir Socor, one of the most important observers of geopolitics in the ex-Soviet territories, has pointed out that Moscow is threatening to change the route of South Stream so that it runs through Romania. Bulgaria and Serbia might be prepared to swallow Moscow's conditions if they were convinced that they would otherwise lose the project to Romania. It is difficult to say whether Romania is intending to join the South Stream project or whether it simply wants to force its Serbian and Bulgarian neighbours in a particular direction in its own interests, but at the same time it is helping to 'bury ' the Nabucco variant."

Hooligans in Romania's football stadiums

Chairs wrenched free, fights among fans and clashes with the police are a common sight at Romanian football stadiums - despite the new, stricter security measures and regulations aimed at combating violence in sport. Last week fans of the national team "Steaua" hit a cameraman and destroyed his camera. Ovidiu Nahoi comments: "The violence has its roots in society. There is violence in Romanian football because Romania is crazy. Romania is a country where the winners are people who talk and act violently... The stadiums embrace violence. They create the opportunity and even incite acts of aggression and they allow the perpetrators to act violently with almost no fear of reprisal... Romanian football offers no solutions to violence because the managers of the teams themselves represent and use violence."

Romania's undiplomatic gesture towards Italy

In an open letter published in the Italian daily 'La Repubblica', six ambassadors, including the Romanian ambassador, yesterday called on Italy not to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan. Ovidiu Nahoi comments: "Romania made another faux pas yesterday! Together with the ambassadors of Great Britain, Canada, Holland, Australia and the US, our ambassador to Rome signed an open letter which appealed to Italy to maintain its troops in Afghanistan. This gesture amazed the Italian government, which can't understand why the six ambassadors addressed the general public before informing the government of their intentions, in accordance with the dictates of diplomacy… Our policies are supposed to be predictable and our accession to the EU is intended to contribute to its internal stability. Yet leading Romanian politicians are ignoring this entirely. They're like kids at school who only stay out of mischief when they know the teacher is watching them."
