Multiculturalism
The Swedish government has proclaimed 2006 the year of multiculturalism. But what exactly are the implications of a multicultural society? And what does it mean to be Swedish nowadays? According to author Mohamed Omar, Swedish society has always been multicultural. Urban culture has always coexisted with rural culture and Bourgeois culture has existed alongside workers' culture. According to Omar, language is what unites a society. "The Swedish language determines what is Swedish. There is no other instrument for deciding what is Swedish and what is not. It's not values, physical appearance, patterns of behaviour or anything else that makes a person Swedish. The culture which finds its expression in the Swedish language is what's Swedish."
