Tassos Papadopoulos urges the reunification of Cyprus
The Cypriot president, Tassos Papadopoulos, explains in an interview with Christian Makarian why the Greek Cypriots rejected the UN peace plan in April 2004. "I know a lot of people were upset by our rejection of the Annan plan. But from our point of view, this peace plan was not the product of a negotiated agreement, the fruit of a common and concerted position. It looked more like a call made by a referee. ... In my opinion, we cannot speak of any agreement that does not concretely envisage the reunification of the territory, the society, the economy and, in a final stage, of the institutions themselves within one and the same state. None of this existed in the Annan plan. This is why the Greek Cypriot people rejected it: we categorically refuse a state that would be comprised of two separate zones and two kinds of communal structures while roughly 82 percent of the population is Greek."
