Sarkozy meets with approval

Philippe Ricard, Strasbourg correspondent for the French newspaper Le Monde, comments in a podcast on the warm reception Nicolas Sarkozy's speech was given in the European Parliament. "It is clear that he came with the intention of seducing the MEPs. One can see that since the beginning of his French presidency Sarkozy has been trying to fortify his ties to European institutions. ... And today he came to reap the fruits of his work. He presented the four top priorities of his presidency and stressed that he ... will need the support of the MEPs. This was a very welcome speech."

Philippe Ricard asks what is Europe's political role

The French journalist Philippe Ricard looks in to the evolution of the international role of the EU since its foundation. "Although an economic giant, the EU, like the Federal German Republic during the Cold War, remains a 'political midget'. But the Twenty Seven want to have influence in the evolution of the world although their predecessors would have resisted the slightest geo-strategic ambition in 1957 when the East-West conflict was at its height dividing the continent in to two opposing blocs. ... The EU has the ambition to further contribute to the peaceful resolution of conflicts. It intends to promote democracy and prosperity beyond its borders, that is in the unstable neighbouring territories. In the long term, fifty years after the failure of the European Defence Community, the most ambitious of them envisaged the creation of a European army. This is a huge programme, on condition that the Twenty Seven do not limit themselves to good intentions on the occasion of commemorations and that they also find enough collective spirit to act on them."

What European cooperation for clandestine immigration?

"The continual flow of African immigrants in the Canary Islands, as well as in Malta and Sicily, constitutes a brutal baptism by fire for the new European agency Frontex", notes Philippe Ricard, who attended the EU conference of foreign ministers on Saturday, September 2nd, in Lapeenranta, Finland. "The Frontex mission is to coordinate efforts of cooperation between the 25 Member states on the outer borders of the Union. Funding, however, has yet to be made available. ... For the time being, the agency will have to commit most of its manpower - 65 people - to the two missions carried out in the Mediterranean. ... Those in charge of Frontex regret that only a handful of State members - Italy, Portugal, Germany, Finland and France - responded to their appeals to come to aid Spanish authorities".
