Austria's grand coalition faces collapse

After Austria's Social Democrats (SPÖ) agreed to the setting up of an enquiry committee to investigate claims of corruption against their coalition partner, the conservative ÖVP, the coalition is on the verge of collapse. However Martina Salomon sees no way out of the current alliance for the SPÖ, considering a coalition with the right-wing populist FPÖ just as unlikely as an alliance with the Greens: "The Austrian politicians' self-destructive conduct has reached the point where new elections would be a game of Russian roulette for the chancellor. Thanks to the rapidly-growing 'party' of non-voters and 'white voters' (who intentionally make invalid votes), it's hard to predict the election result. Despite its freshly-oiled voting machinery, the SPÖ is in danger of ending up in second place. And because the big parties are losing ground, alternatives to the grand coalition haven't much of a chance of success."

Restricting Admissions to Universities

Austria has long been trying to restrict the number of Germans studying medicine at its universities. One of the first systems of rules introduced for this purpose has been declared illegal by the European Court of Justice (ECJ). Now a new solution has been proposed. Martina Salomon comments: "The new quotas introduced for foreign students will solve the ECJ problem temporarily. What's missing is a serious educational plan... The new regulations for university admittance, according to which 75 percent of the places at universities of medicine are reserved for Austrians, are not entirely above-board from a legal point of view, but they keep the problem under control for the time being – at least until the European Court of Justice's next ruling. Besides, Belgium is doing the same thing. In an attempt to fend off the hoards of refugee students from French universities, the country announced the introduction of similar regulations in early February. The proportion of foreign students allowed to study at the universities in question has now been limited to 30 percent."
