Muslim identity and European culture

"Does there exist a dominant European culture that Muslims can, or want, to be a part of? In principle, no," the political analyst Norbert Both and the CEO Nabil Taouati reply in the Dutch daily. "The argument in defence of a dominant European culture often sounds like an appeal to Muslims to choose between assimilation or leaving." For the writers, "amid the confusion arising from globalisation, migration trends and terrorism, Europeans are in search of a reference point. (...) Both advocates and opponents of the idea of Leitkultur [a dominant culture] refer to a culture that is at once exclusive, ethno-nationalist and christian. The violence in the French suburbs and in Sydney aptly reflect this principle: us against them."
