Kosovo, a threat to European peace
"In the Balkans, the war has been won, the genocide launched by Milosevitch has been stopped and an opportunity has been given to Serbia to follow the path of civilisation and democracy leading to Europe", comments Hermann Tertsch. "But what has happened in Iraq and in Afghanistan shows that in the Balkans too, it is possible to lose peace after winning a war, even 18 years on. European history is full of examples of such periods of wavering that prove to be mere truces preceding the resumption of conflict. This scenario seems all the more probable in Kosovo in the light of the fear generated by the possibility of independence illustrated by growing resistance to the plan drawn up by former Finnish president, Marti Ahtisaari."

Hermann Tertsch deplores political use of the past
During a recent commemoration of thousands of Italians who perished under the Tito regime during the Second World War, Giorgio Napoiltano spoke of a "a movement of hate and bloody fury". Stipe Mesic, his Croat counterpart, responded by accusing him of "racism and historic revisionism". For the Spanish journalist Hermann Tertsch, this quarrel "would be laughable were it not a symptom of one of the worst political evils in Europe that should be everyone's concern. ... From anti-German agitation used by the Kaczynski brothers in ruling over Poland to the destructions of Soviet monuments in the Balkans, more and more European leaders are resorting to the invention of enemies past and present, internal or external. They only pay homage to the dead that they consider their own, whereas recognition of victims on the other side is a basic condition for succeeding to correctly get to grips with the past."

Populism in Eastern Europe
Editorialist Hermann Tertsch recalls that less than 10 years ago, Europe did not shy away from expressing its indignation over the Austrian People's Party's worrying alliance with the Freedom Party of Jorg Haider, an extreme-right demagogue." But later, "the EU said nothing when Berlusconi formed a government with post-fascists. Alliances that would have stunned us just a short time ago, are multiplying. In Poland, the party of the Kaczynski brothers has allied itself with extremists. The country's polarisation is growing from day to day. The coalition openly governs in defiance of the will of the liberal half of Polish society, it encourages a narrow-minded spirit of revenge and characterises all those who dare to criticise, as communists. This is happening in Poland, a country the same size as Spain and which experienced a political transition similar to ours."

Valdimir Putin and the energy weapon
"Russia's backward slide towards 'Sovietism with a tsar' was bound to end with a threat to Europe's security and interests," writes the journalist Hermann Tertsch. He accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of "seeking to blow up the alliance that exists between Kiev and Brussels, thereby destabilising Ukraine. The rhetoric is brutal. He accuses Kiev of stealing the gas intended for the Europeans, and then closes his borders to Ukrainian meat and draws up new reprisal measures. (...) The Russian regime has opted for Asian, as opposed to European, methods in its race to globalise. Europe cannot prevent it from doing so, but must take appropriate action. (...) Vienna [as of January 1, Austria has presided over the EU] has to confront a tsar."
