Dubravka Ugrešić calls for a monument to the Polish plumber
Dubravka Ugrešić, a Croat writer living in Amsterdam, writes about the "spectre of the Polish plumber": "It's a spectre that walks Europe's streets wearing protective clothing, carrying his tools and instilling fear in Europe's working classes. For the hard-working locals there's no hope as long as the Polish plumber flies threateningly above their heads like Batman... [Therefore] I propose that we set up a monument to the unknown Polish plumber in several European cities. Why? Because the Polish plumber has become the first victim of European unification and in particular of European expansion. And as all talk of the Polish plumber is filled with fear and hate - eclipsing even the proverbially hated gypsy - the monument should consist of only a base. And that base should be engraved with the sad inscription: 'Monument to the unknown Polish plumber'."
