The end of a Czech-Slovak magazine
Mosty, a small but nonetheless highly respected magazine, is about to be closed down. The magazine saw itself as a bridge between Prague and Bratislava. Libuse Valentova laments its closure. "During the separation of the Federation in 1992, politicians from both sides assured us that Czech-Slovak relations would be excellent. But in reality the two nations have grown apart. The fact that Czech children's understanding of the Slovak language is deteriorating proves this. The Czechs and Slovaks have gradually come to accept their independent states but continue to seek stronger bonds with each other. It's not enough to watch our neighbours' news programmes or go to Slovak theatres every now and then. Mosty was unique and provided information from all four Visegrad states (including Hungary and Poland). The inexplicable cuts in public funding have brought about the closure of the magazine."
