Desafío para Europa en Gaza

En la reunión de hoy del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU en relación con el conflicto de Gaza, la UE cumpliría un importante papel debido al vacío de poder en los EE.UU., opina el periódico Dagens Nyheter. "En realidad resulta a todas luces positivo. Se ha hablado durante mucho tiempo de que la UE y los EE.UU. podían llevar a cabo algo en conjunto – los europeos, sobre todo mediante su contacto con los palestinos y los estadounidenses, mediante su contacto con Israel. Como sucede a menudo cuando la UE debe reaccionar en la palestra internacional, el problema reside en que es necesaria una unidad si esa voz quiere hacerse oír y que la tomen en serio. El estado normal es una divergencia [de opiniones]. En relación con Oriente Próximo, algunos Estados expresan abiertamente su crítica de Israel, mientras que otros se plantean las preguntas en materia de política internacional sobre todo junto a Washington. ... Para ser sinceros: La UE no está sola en sus dificultades con el tema. El resto de los actores tampoco ha llegado demasiado lejos en cuanto a su unidad."

Per Ahlin, author of the leader in the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, stresses that the decision to award the Olympic Games to Beijing has served to focus the world's attention on the situation in China. "I think that what has been said and done in the past year could have a lasting impact. A well-known example of this is how Beijing, afraid that a widespread boycott could ruin the celebrations, toned down its opposition to international involvement in Darfur. But more important in my opinion are all the looks that have turned towards China - looks that would otherwise have been turned elsewhere. As a result it is no longer possible to talk of China's economic miracle without mentioning human rights and the destruction of the environment. The other side of the coin has become more visible to all thanks to the Olympic Games. The Chinese leadership did not reckon with this when it rejoiced over the decision to award the Games to Beijing."

Columnist Per Ahlin notes that international issues have been almost entirely ignored in the Swedish election campaign. He cites the deployment of Swedish troops in Afghanistan as an example, pointing out that while Swedish politicians are locked in endless discussions about unemployment figures and educational policy, the future of the NATO mission remains entirely unclear. The US wants member states to commit more troops but NATO partners are either reluctant or simply lack the necessary resources. "But the entire future of NATO and even of the entire world order is at stake here. This conflict could represent a death-blow to a world order based on international cooperation."
