Jean-Michel Berg on the carbon dioxidisation of human life
Journalist Jean-Michel Berg postulates that CO2 has become the new moral currency in today's world: "The carbon dioxidisation of human life is underway. Although the ability to make scientifically precise measurements means the cause of this phenomenon is a technical one, the effects are primarily of a moral nature because human behaviour is now divided into acts that are climate-friendly and acts that are not. There is hardly a religion or ideology that ever had such a clear interpretation. ... Spheres of life such as living spaces and mobility have come under critical scrutiny. And now that it has allegedly been established that men cause more damage to the climate than women even our genetic disposition is being called into question. Even divorce must be answered for from an environmental point of view - as well as before God - because married households are more environmentally friendly than those of singles. In short, it's not harmful, correctible behaviour that generates CO2 - it's human behaviour as such."

Jean-Michel Berg on the corporate blog
Jean-Michel Berg reflects on the power of the blog and how private companies are trying to take advantage of the public platform provided by the net. "Blogs constitute a counter-public space - in some countries, the only truly relevant space - and they have a wide readership. In the Western world it's mainly the big companies that have felt the impact of blogs. Now they're trying to wrestle back power over the way their enterprises are perceived. The "corporate blog" is now a requisite supplement to a company's obligatory Internet presence. ... What appears to be a public space is in reality a marketing instrument. This results from the monological structure of the blog. Although anyone is free to comment on a blog, only the blogger writes the blog. This means the company determines which topics are on the agenda. But once discussion is limited to the confines set by a company, the discourse is no longer free and the commentary function only suggests freedom, rather than providing it."

MySpace for misanthropists
Some online social platforms have become so popular that certain people are keeping their distance, writes Jean-Michel Berg. The latest trend is antisocial networks. "They have names like Hatebook or Enemybook, Isolatr or Introvertster and cater to a certain mind-set. ... Naturally the concept of an antisocial network is in itself a paradox - a sociable unsociability. ... At Hatebook you don't make friends, you make enemies. Yet the networking idea remains, albeit according to the principle: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. There are also tools for spreading rumours or stirring up trouble in other ways. At Ruduzu and Snubster, surfers can compile hate lists and declare someone their mortal enemy. But this puts the basic plan at risk: what's being created here is a kind of MySpace for depressives and misanthropists who are united by their hate of George W. Bush or Bill Gates."
