Immigration puts European solidarity to the test
"The proposal by Malta for member states [made by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg] to share the burden, when illegal immigrants are saved in international and third country search and rescue (SAR) waters, received a lukewarm response by EU Justice Ministers yesterday", notes the daily. " [Borg] proposed an agreement among EU member states, whereby illegal immigrants saved at sea by EU-registered vessels in the SAR region of a non-EU state that refuses to shoulder its responsibilities, would be shared by EU member states on a strictly proportional basis and according to a pre-accepted system. He also proposed that ... the number of immigrants so received would be deducted from the immigrants/refugees quota a receiving EU country might have agreed with the UNHCR [the UN refugee agency]."

Petrol beneath the Val di Noto?
The Sicilian writer Andrea Camilleri is appealing for a campaign to save the 'Val de Noto', in the south of Sicily, a region with eight towns that are known for their baroque architecture. An American company, Panther Eureka, has been given permission to seek out hydrocarbon beneath the ground of the valley. "How would the Milanese feel if they were told that there were an advanced project to hunt for petrol just in front of the Duomo? And the Venetians, if they were told that St Marc's Square were about to be dug up? Would Florentines accept a drilling machine in the Santa Croce church? How about the inhabitants of Rome, Verona, Lake Garda ? Wouldn't they be most deeply offended? And yet this is what is happening to Sicily, in Val Di Noto, despite the fact that the zone has been declared world heritage by UNESCO. ... This means the total destruction, in one fell swoop, of landscape and history, culture and identity, beauty and harmony, basically the best things we have."

The arrest of a mafia Godfather after 43 years on the run
The Sicilian writer Andrea Camilleri welcomes the arrest on Tuesday, April 11 of Cosa Nostra Godfather Bernardo Provenzano, but regrets that the mafia chief benefitted from so much complicity over the decades. "We can only express delight and offer our deepest thanks to the law enforcers and magistrates who were instrumental in Bernardo Provenzano's arrest. After 43 years on the run, I feel a little cleaner, but not entirely, since 43 years is a long time. Too long for a civilised country... I am convinced that this evasion was possible thanks only to a solid protection net around him. A net composed of people beyond suspicion, politicians and businessmen. Two generations of people above suspicion, who colluded directly or indirectly with Provenzano."
