Rick Coolsaet forsees the growing rejection of Jihadist terrorism

Rick Coolsaet, professor of international relations at the University of Gand, analyses the scope of the terrorist threat in an interview with Dominique Berns. "The motor of terrorism is, systematically linked to local context, to respective societies. But there is currently an international context that allows different local sources to be united in the image of a global threat: there exists among Muslims a feeling of humiliation and fear towards the West. And we, the westerners, have the impression that we are under threat from Islam. This reciprocal fear fuels a heavy atmosphere ... . In all history, all forms of terrorism have come to a dead-end, have never obtained the desired results. For whoever wants to see them, the signs of a rejection of Jihadist terrorism are now visible everywhere, including in Arab-Muslim countries."

Muslims in Europe

Rik Coolsaet, a professor of international relations at the University of Gand, believes it is erroneous to speak of "Muslim" terrorism. "The terrorists are a smattering of amateurs ... who take up arms in the name of their coreligionists. But the latter do not approve of them. I did not use the terms 'Islam' or 'Muslim'. Religion plays only a secondary role in such cases. The driving dynamic in modern terrorism is similar to what we saw with the Belgian leftist extremists, the Red Army Faction or the anarchist terrorists of the 19th century. ... Only a small number of anarchists were terrorists. The violent extremists were a fringe minority of the left in the 1980s. Why do we refer today to 'Muslim terrorism' and regard European Muslims as a fifth column?"

Europe must not be afraid of immigrants

Rik Coolsaet, a professor of international relations at the University of Gand, debunks some commonly accepted notions about immigration. "The International Organization for Migration has once again clarified certain realities. Immigrants pay more in taxes than they receive in social allocations (translation: they help 'us' to pay our pensions). Immigrants and natives do not compete for the same jobs (translate: they do not steal 'our' jobs). Naturally, immigration is not without a few hitches. ... [But] today's situation is not worse than that which existed in the past. On the contrary. A century ago, one-tenth of the world's population migrated, versus less then three percent today. These days, relatively fewer immigrants are arriving in Europe than 30 years earlier."
