Paolo Flores d'Arcais denounces the crusade of Benedict XVI
The Italian philosopher Paolo Flores d'Arcais, editor in chief of MicroMega, deplores the speech delivered by Pope Benedict XVI in his latest encyclical. "The crusade goes on. The encyclical entitled 'Spe Salvi' and sent out by Benedict XVI last November 30th, ratifies and radicalises the anathema of a Catholic Church set against a modernity guilty of disobeying God and consequently hurling itself into desperate nihilism. All has been said now. Even democracy is a lie if mankind's sovereignty is not subordinate to the imperative of 'natural law', which is to say, if freedom doesn't coincide with Church ukases, the only authorised interpreter of this natural law and the will of God. Democracy has to be Christian, if not it will be inhuman. The mystery has finally been solved. ... Evil comes from the enlightenment, the project that strives for mankind's autonomy."

Paolo Flores d'Arcais on Romano Prodi's Berlusconian conduct
"The Prodi government has betrayed voters," Italian philosopher and leftist intellectual Paolo Flores d'Arcais explains in an interview with Petra Reski. He complains that Prodi is pursuing Berlusconian policies without Berlusconi. "One of his campaign pledges was that all the laws that were enacted to help Berlusconi out of his personal problems would be rescinded. Yet only one has been abolished - and even that was by the Constitutional Court rather than the government. Not a single judicial reform has been carried out. The only measure in this respect was a sweeping punishment amnesty. Everyone agreed on that - both the left and the right - because they both have colleagues against whom charges have been brought. But although the Prodi government has betrayed voters in every point of its election manifesto we must keep this government, simply because Berlusconi is not an option."

Paolo Flores d'Arcais and the end of the Berlusconi era
The Italian philosopher Paolo Flores d'Arcais, editor of the quarterly journal 'MicroMega', hopes that the "Berlusconi nightmare" is really over. "If the Prodi government does not manage to bring an immediate end to Berlusconi's monopoly of the media ..., if he fails to pass a law requiring one to choose between economic (and not simply mediatic) and political power, ... Berlusconi will continue to be the 'High Priest' of the Italian anomaly. And if, a year down the road, there should be new elections, he would have a good chance of winning. So long as the roots have not been severed, Italy will remain subject to the description made by Dante Alighieri eight centuries ago: 'Oh, enslaved Italy, place of sorrow, ship without captain in a storm, not respectable lady but place of corruption'."
