Greece joins South Stream gas pipeline project
On April 29th Greece signed up to the South Stream gas pipeline project, driven by the Russian giant Gazprom and Italy's ENI. "The time has come to assert loud and clear a fact: Greece is playing a major role in the global energy poker game. Joining the South Stream gas pipeline project ... has made Greece into a strategic energy crossroads for Southern Europe," stresses Giorgos Delastic. "The pipeline is slated to supply Europe with 33 thousand million cubic metres of gas when it is commissioned. Before he officially quit office, Vladimir Putin made a special point of ensuring the success of South Stream. That is why he made a beeline for Italy to congratulate Silvio Berlusconi last week and to offer assurances that there would be no changes to Russia's energy policy."

Greece's Archbishop Christodoulos, a hard act to follow
The funeral of the leader of the Greek Orthodox church, Archbishop Christodoulos, takes place on Thursday, January 31. Giorgios Delastic describes how the church, which is not seperate from the state, has exerted a powerful influence on foreign policy. "Archbishop Christodoulos was a reforming nationalist. But he was quick to grasp the foreign policy game. With Greece a member of the EU, he had to strengthen ties with the Vatican... When angry over the Turkish question, he drew closer to the very powerful Russian Orthodox church in order to ease tensions. He was more a politician than an archbishop. His charisma is lacking among the candidates for the position of Archbishop of Athens. That is why the election to choose his successor has monopolised media attention. On issues like Cyprus, FYROM, and Turkey, any false move could have unfortunate consequences."

Karamanlis survives fires
For Georges Delastic, the daily's editorialist, this election is a "major defeat for the Pasok. The Greek socialist party is going through an unprecedented internal crisis. Greek citizens have re-elected the conservative government despite financial scandals and deadly fires last August. The Pasok is under shock. This historical party, which gave Greeks a new hope in 1981 thanks to Andreas Papandreou, now only gathers the disappointed. Some dared to vote for more conservative parties, such as the communist party which benefited from youthful votes following last year's student revolt. Others, such as the far-right, have gained access to Parliament for the first time. This latter factor is important, especially in the management of diplomatic relations with neighbours such as Macedonia and Turkey."

Dissonance in the Turkish March
The Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullah Gül, declared on Wednesday, November 15th, that his country will not give in to the EU's 'blackmail' concerning Cyprus. Georgios Delastic reacts to these statements by accusing Turkey of wanting to 'benefit from an a la carte accession that would only serve its own interests! So Gül says he is adamant and refuses to succumb to European blackmail. One may well wonder if it is not Ankara that is blackmailing with such declarations, while Turkey is still not capable of respecting European criteria. It is a classic case of a snake biting its tail. Once again the Turks are proving to be of ill-faith. They are announcing right now that the tune will change once the country enters the EU. Granted, some do consider this positive, but we risk moving towards an individualistic European dialogue. And if the vote on the European budget was already a test of strength for leaders, what will it be like with Turkey?"
