The Giertych family is complicating relations between Poland and the EU
"Political autism and frequent outbursts from within the Polish government and those parties that support them are trying the patience of their partners and EU institutions that, officially of not, are beginning to respond with increasingly harsh criticism and threats", notes Fernando Garcia, the daily's correspondent in Brussels. "And as if the genetic component were not blatant and grotesque enough in the executive authority presided over by Lech Kaczynski and directed by his brother Jaroslaw, it happens that the latest scandals to be provoked by Polish representatives in Brussels were caused by people carrying the same name. First of all Giertych senior, whose first name is Maciej and who is a MEP representing the ultra conservative movement, the League of Polish Families. He triggered the unanimous outrage in European parliament when he used its logo on an anti-Semitic text." And his son Roman, Polish Education Minister, caused a stir last week calling for a Europe-wide ban against abortion and "homosexual propaganda".

Change in the European Parliament
Fernando Garcia and Beatriz Navarro take stock of the Catalan Josep Borrell's activity at the head of the European Parliament. "At first he suffered a lot from the little knowledge he had of this post and he had to understand the importance of reaching a consensus within a chamber as unpredictable as the European Parliament. But this did not stop him giving a personal touch to his mandate by delivering critical speeches or providing fine analysis contrary to the soporific dissertations that presidents traditionally like to give at European summits, meetings at which Borrell knew how to express his ideas in a unique manner. He also knew how to take advantage of the international scope of his mandate by engaging in numerous foreign missions, an interest that he will be able to pursue if he is selected as head of one of the commissions that he would like to direct".

The European far-right is getting organised
"The neo-fascist winds that have been blowing more and more strongly, creeping into practically every corner of Europe, have finally got past the walls of Parliament", explains Fernando Garcia, correspondent for the Brussels daily. "If there are no last-minute desertions or disagreements in their sparsely populated ranks, the twenty most extremist MEPs in the EU parliament will form a parliamentary group baring the eloquently formulated name 'Identity, Tradition and Sovereignty' (ITS). ... There will be a bit of everything in this group: from the young puppies or little known members of the ultra-nationalist right from the East, to the much more renowned names, those descendents of those high-profile families that evoke the traditional fascism of Western Europe, such as Jean-Marie Le Pen, the leader of the French National Front (FN), or else the Duce's little heiress, Alessandra Mussolini."
