A time of great change in Poland
Grzegorz Gauden welcomes the fact that PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski has now officially been elected prime minister, saying that up to now he had been pulling the strings from behind the scenes: "He has traded in the role of a reviewer for that of a decision-maker. Now he's being taught an important lesson in how to govern. As leader of the main party, he can make decisions and reach agreements with coalition partners quickly. This is a big advantage when it comes to governing and reforming a state."

The PiS coalition and Samoobrona
Following lengthy negotiations, the conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS), which until now has governed alone, has decided to form a coalition with the populist Samoobrona (self-defence) party led by Andrzej Lepper and the newly-formed splinter faction NKP comprising former representatives of the League of Polish Families (LPR). As was the case with the old government, which was tolerated solely by Samoobrona, the right-wing clerical party LPR and the Farmers' Party PSL, the new government does not have a parliamentary majority. Editor Gregorz Gauden criticises the new coalition pointing out that future Deputy Prime Minister Andrzej Lepper has "been convicted in a criminal trial" and is "a demagogue and a populist". This is a sad day for Polish democracy. Lepper's victory is a defeat for the Solidarnosc ethos which existed and still exists today, albeit in different shades. It's the defeat of an ethos that was based on the premise that there are values in politics that cannot be renounced."

Political and Social Change in Poland
Editor-in-chief Grzegorz Gauden lists his expectations of the new Polish government and its president. "Without doubt, Poland's political landscape is undergoing great change, first with Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz's new government and now with the swearing in of Lech Kaczynski. The time has come for him to take over the task of real government and fulfil his election pledges. The latter were sometimes inconsistent and bordered on populism. As an experienced opposition politician, even under communist dictatorship, it is his duty to uphold the constitutional principles cherished by his party and not give in to the temptation of taking shortcuts in implementing vital reforms. I am convinced that Kaczynski will adhere to these principles."
