Ex premier portugués se aísla

En Portugal continúa el debate sobre las declaraciones del ex primer ministro de Portugal, José Sócrates, emitidas hace dos semanas en París. Según afirma el columnista Alberto Gonçalves en su artículo del periódico Diário de Notícias, Sócrates debería lamentar haber dicho que sería infantil que países pequeños como Portugal y España saldaran sus deudas: "El episodio sobre todo me conmovió. De repente, por primera vez en la vida, y espero que última, Sócrates me dio pena. ¿Pero qué fue aquello, Dios mío? Una cosa son las enormes limitaciones de esa criatura, otra es la candidez con que la criatura las expone. Pobre hombre aquel que no tiene un alma amiga para prevenirlo de hacer el ridículo, que está rodeado de tontos o de aduladores dispuestos a alimentar sus delirios, que vive en definitiva en una completa soledad. El precio del poder, o de los privilegios que otorga el poder, no debería ser tan elevado."

A big anti-Zapatero demonstration in Spain

Urged by the Spanish far-right, several thousands of people demonstrated in Spain on Saturday, March 10th, to protest against the partial emancipation of the Basque prisoner José Ignacio de Juana Chaos. The Portuguese journalist Alberto Gonçalves makes an implicit plea for the resignation of the Spanish Prime Minister Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. "The reason for the demonstration, as we know, is the decision taken by Zapatero to free an ETA psychopath on hunger strike. But this is a symbolic reason, given the fact that submission to terrorism is a sort of trademark for the current government, created under the fear and misunderstandings around March 11th. This Sunday, another March 11th, the victims of the terrorist attacks three years ago were honoured with a glass monument and the presence of 'Mr' Zapatero, apparently dazed by the barbarism that pushed the Spanish to elect him. Although a bit late, the best tribute to the victims would be for the Spanish to recognise and rectify this mistake. As we saw on Saturday, we are not so far off from this."
