Con relación a una serie de sucesos de motivación xenófoba contra inmigrantes en Italia, el periódico La Repubblica constata un cambio de postura de los inmigrantes: "La pasividad tiene un final. Los inmigrantes dejan de aceptar la violencia en silencio. ... Las zonas conflictivas de Italia no son como las de Francia, limitadas a los suburbios, sino que se encuentran repartidas por todo el país. Italia es desde el punto de vista social y geográfio un banlieue [zona periférica]. Los últimos sucesos muestran [no obstante] que, a pesar de los imperdonables intentos de justificación de los delitos [por parte de los políticos] , el presente todavía no está caracterizado por un conflicto [racial] radical e inflexible. Entre los jóvenes de la segunda generación de inmigrantes crece la convicción de que es necesario también en Italia el nacimiento de una organización SOS Racismo, según el modelo francés, contra la discriminación; los objetivos de la extensa organización se centrarían en facilitar y garantizar la integración. Una solución que precisa de aliados políticos, condición que resulta problemática en la Italia actual, donde el contraste con los inmigrantes y no su integración constituye un factor de éxito electoral."

Olmert to resign

Following Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's announcement of resignation amidst allegations of corruption, the daily La Repubblica describes the problems facing the country once he leaves office: "Aside from the personal fate of the prime minister, which is now in the hands of the judges, there is also the danger that the negotiations with the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) could be put on ice and that the likelihood of an attack against Iran will increase. It is no coincidence that one of the potential successors, Shaul Mofaz, one of the hawks of the [ruling] Kadima Party, immediately declared he would block any hypothesis of an agreement with the Palestinians. Mofaz also takes a critical view of the ceasefire with Hamas. The election of current Foreign Minister Tizpi Livni, on the other hand, could lead to the formation of a majority government made up of the Labor Party and Likud. This is a solution that comes up in Israel every time internal instability or armed conflict threaten the political system. Both Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu, the so-called Russian party, have been calling for a tougher stance on Ramallah and Gaza as well as Teheran. Much depends ... on the results of the primary elections and the decisions of the Labor Party."

Italian military convoy attacked in Iraq

One soldier was killed and four injured, one critically, in a bomb attack on an Italian military convoy that was escorting British troops to Nassiriya, in southern Iraq. The attack comes at the moment when Romano Prodi, following up on an election promise, is preparing to withdraw half of Italy's troops. For sociologist Renzo Guolo, the Italians' position in Iraq is no longer tenable. "Italy is paying a heavy price for the mission in Iraq, a mission that the government has decided to terminate but which, in a country spiraling out of control, continues to pose considerable risks to our soldiers. ... Iraqi groups do not make a distinction between countries. Between those who are staying on and those who are preparing to leave. Between the United States and the United Kingdom on the one hand, and Italy on the other."
